Recklinghausen on foot

Take your time for your tour of the old town and stroll at your own pace. Discover quaint alleys, the historic-romantic city center, cultural sights and green oases.

During the old town tour you will get to know all five quarters of the good room of Recklinghausen's old town. The guidance system takes you with its signposts to 19 historical buildings and places along the 2,6 kilometer long tour of the old town. At the individual stations, an information board provides background information worth knowing.

You are in the “Palais Vest” quarter. Motorists park behind it City Hall (1); 5 minutes walk from the train/bus station you are in front of the characterful building, built in the style of the German Renaissance and inaugurated in 1908.

On the square in front of the town hall you will see a fountain with a group of figures "Citizens carry their city" (2). If you have some time: behind the town hall, the small but fine Erlbruchpark awaits you. Otherwise: Via the street, left along the Kaiserwall to the Viehtor and from there in the direction of the old town.

Walk up Breite Straße in the direction of the “Markt” quarter. After a few steps you are in front of the "Old Pharmacy" (3), which has been owned by a long-established family of pharmacists since 1873. Standing in front of the pharmacy, the tour of the old town continues to the left of the pharmacy in the direction of Kellerstrasse.

Turn left into Kellerstraße and follow it to Sparkasse Vest Recklinghausen. Right into the Paulsörter, after a few steps you are in front of the replica of the Log Fountain (4). Follow the Paulsörter in the direction of "West Quartier", past lovingly restored farm houses to the Heilige-Geist-Straße.

At the intersection with the Holy Spirit Street you are standing on the former Gymnasium Church of the Gymnasium Petrinum (5), the oldest school in Recklinghausen. Just follow a few steps along the street and you will see the old one on the right Guest Church (6).

Follow Heiligen-Geist-Strasse to the crossroads with Augustinessenstrasse. Turn left and after a few meters you will see the magnificent Castel Sant'Angelo (7). Follow the road and turn right at the wall. There you can already see some of the old ones city ​​wall (8)that surrounded the old town.

Follow the course of the old wall up to Willy Brandt House (9). It was formerly used as a district hall and will be occupied again by the adult education center after the thorough renovation has been completed. In the Willy-Brandt-Park behind you will find the music school, the gallery "Kutscherhaus" and "Die BRÜCKE", the municipal institute for intercultural encounters and integration. Treat yourself to the few steps to the Sparkasse high-rise opposite him, on the other side of the Herzogswall, the Kirkeby Sculpture (10) by the Dane Per Kirkeby, which harmoniously takes up the forms of the memorial. It forms the entrance to the idyllic Lohtor Cemetery (11), a green space steeped in history.

Take Münsterstrasse back to the Krim district. You will soon be standing at the square on Johannes-Janssen-Strasse with the world-famous Icon Museum (12). Behind it lies the oldest church in Recklinghausen, the Provost Church of St. Peter (13).

From there, along St. Peter, to the heart of Recklinghausen, the Old Town Market (14), summer and winter pulsating center of our city, starting point for shopping sprees or gourmet trips through Recklinghausen's beautiful, idyllic and busy old town. From the market down Kunibertistraße to the old peasant and half-timbered houses "Verstege Merchant's House" (15) and "Gravemann's Court" (16).

Standing in front of Gravemanns Hof, a small corridor leads along to Schaumburgstraße. Turn right and you are back on the Altstadtmarkt. There you can City Bells (17) at the Old Town Hall and hear them play four times a day. Take the opportunity and make yourself comfortable in one of the cafés on the market or turn from the "Breite Straße" into the Lampengässchen, follow the Herren- and Löhrhofstraße in the direction of the Palais Vest. You can see them on Herrenstrasse Old Vicary (18), a slate building with rare ornamental form. At the Löhrhof you can pass through the Palais Vest and soon you will see the town hall. At the crossroads on your right you will see the last station, das Still Building (19), before you are back in front of the town hall.
