On the trail of 1.000 years of Recklinghausen history
Recklinghausen was mentioned as early as 1017. In 1236 Recklinghausen officially became a city and later a member of the Hanseatic League. In 1864 the first mine was located on the Emscher. The mining age began and the population increased tenfold to 50.000 in a short time. Today Recklinghausen, with around 120.000 inhabitants, is a trading and shopping center between the Ruhr area and Münsterland.
Let our city guides present Recklinghausen's history to you in a humorous way and enriched with informative anecdotes.
Enjoy the peace and quiet in the impressive St. Peter's Church and then watch the hustle and bustle of people strolling through the old town from one of the cafés or restaurants.
At the popular market square you can hear the former town hall bells tolling.
Things are more tranquil in the Icon Museum, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.
Further historical traces in the training mine are more likely to be hiked than walked. On a 1,3 km route, experienced miners will introduce you to the underground world of work using entertaining facts and kebabs. If you dare, you can get hands-on with the machines yourself.
For an entertaining evening, we would be happy to find the right event for you in the Ruhrfestspielhaus or one of our neighboring cities in the Ruhr metropolis or, of course, after a football game in the district.
