City wall with defense tower in Recklinghausen

1000 years of city history

Recklinghausen was mentioned as early as 1017. A lot has happened since then: Recklinghausen officially became a city in 1236 and later became a member of the Hanseatic League. Weaving mills, mills, brickworks, printers, paper mills and breweries determined the picture. In 1864 the first colliery settled on the Emscher. The mining age began with the "Clerget" mine and the number of inhabitants increased tenfold to 50.000 in a short time. Today, Recklinghausen, with around 120.000 inhabitants, is a trading and shopping center between the Ruhr area and Münsterland.
