Recklinghausen has been an official "pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city" since 2003. For leisurely tours, there are flat paths along the Emscher and the canals or on the King Ludwig route, a former railway line with many information boards on the subject of mining. If you prefer something more sporty, you can work up a sweat and get your money's worth while hopping through the spoil heap. There are also three "Bed & Bike" certified hotels outside and in the old town, as well as bike shops if you need a repair.
