Museum “Zeche Klärchen”
The Recklinghausen II Mine Museum, popularly known as "Zeche Klärchen"®, doesn't claim to be comparable to large and well-known museums like the Bochum Mining Museum. However, it offers a number of unique features not found in other mining museums. For example, visitors can admire the enormous steam winding engine, preserved in its original condition and the last steam engine built for industrial purposes in Germany. A detailed model of a coal face from a 20th-century mine is expertly explained. The "hallway window" of the Recklinghausen Mining School was rescued from destruction during the building's demolition by former miners and members of the association and, after its restoration, can be admired in our museum. This 10-meter-high artwork is entitled "The World of the Miner." An expert report from the Foundation for the Research Center of 20th-Century Stained Glass recognizes the window as one of the most important monumental works of the 20th century, possessing significant cultural and historical importance. Numerous display cases in the museum vividly illustrate topics such as "The Development of Miners' Lighting," "The Art of Surveying," "Ventilation in Mines," and "Coal Against Hunger" (work and training in the Ruhr mining industry after World War II). The museum hosts various events. For example, it opens its doors every year on Open Monument Day, and weddings can also be held there, as it is a branch of the Recklinghausen registry office.
