Observatory and Planetarium Recklinghausen

The Westphalian People's Observatory and the Planetarium in Recklinghausen offer lectures, planetarium shows, music performances and concerts, as well as observations of the sky. The observation dome is located in the 20 meter high, octagonal tower of the observatory.

By public transport: From Recklinghausen Hbf, take bus line 223 in the direction of Marl to the "Sternwarte" stop, from there continue for about 100m in the direction of travel and turn left into the Stadtgarten. Follow the signs there. Bus lines 25, 214 or 270 in the direction of Marl/Dorsten to the "Knappschaftskrankenhaus" stop, from there approx. 200m along Josef-Wulff-Straße (opposite the hospital entrance). At the tennis courts (crossing Kopernikusstrasse) turn right into Stadtgarten and turn left at the first fork. By car: Leave the A43 at the Recklinghausen/Herten junction, exit and head towards Recklinghausen. Immediately after the exit, get into the left-hand right-hand lane and turn left at the next set of traffic lights (Westring). Follow the signs to "Festspielhaus" and go through the next three traffic lights. Turn right when you find the sign "Ruhrfestspielhaus/Sternwarte" at a crossroads (no traffic lights). You are now on the Cäcilienhöhe, where after about 300m on the right side you will also find the entrance to the observatory. Please use the parking spaces along the Cäcilienhöhe and the Festspielhaus (especially for coaches) about 200m straight ahead. Important information for users of a navigation system or a route planner: Enter "Cäcilienhöhe / crossing Eduard-Pape-Straße" as the destination. Some systems don't find our address or misdirect you to the wrong end of Stadtgarten! Please note: The observatory is located within the Stadtgarten, which is closed to traffic, and has no bus access, no turning possibility and no visitor parking spaces (exception: disabled parking space).

Opening hours:

The observatory and the planetarium are open for the events. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings at 19.30 p.m. public events take place in the observatory or in the planetarium. Children's events are offered every Friday afternoon at 16 p.m. and every other Wednesday afternoon at 17 p.m. The exact event topics and dates will be published in an event calendar. The program booklet is published twice a year. The secretariat and the library are open from Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
