Recklinghausen town hall
On the edge of the old town is one of the most striking buildings in Recklinghausen: the town hall, built in 1908. In 2020, it was voted the most beautiful town hall in the state by the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia. The reason for the new building was the growing number of services for a rapidly increasing population from 1890 onwards. The Recklinghausen town hall was designed by the architect Otto Müller-Jena in the style of the German Renaissance and was intended to commemorate the heyday of German cities in the 16th century in the up-and-coming mining town. Rich facade decorations, niches with figures, pitched roofs, decorated gables, towers, bay windows and balconies - the Recklinghausen town hall appears massive, but at the same time playful and magnificent. Worth seeing are the sandstone sculptures (Hermann the Cheruscan, Boniface and Charlemagne), the knight Roland figure at the main portal, the relief sculpture of the chicken thief at the gate of the inner courtyard and the impressive staircase. Incidentally, in contrast to its three predecessors, the town hall is the first to be built outside the city wall in the Erlbruch. Are you interested in a free tour of the town hall?
