Blue-green Emscherland

From the Emscher river transformation to a nature and water adventure park

Where the Emscher River, the Suderwicher Bach stream, and the Rhine-Herne Canal meet, the Emscherland Nature and Water Adventure Park, opened in 2023, was created on an area of approximately 30 hectares. An Emscher guide shows what can be experienced today at the former open sewer and how flood protection, biodiversity, and educational opportunities are combined with nature-based recreational opportunities: from the spectacular "Leap over the Emscher" bridge to renaturalized floodplains, orchards, perennial beds, and the Emscher terraces with a vineyard and the Emscher beach.

Along the newly built cycle and footpaths, participants explore the Emscherland region on foot and learn more about the history of the river, the origin of the Emscherland region, and the importance of the construction project for biodiversity, flood protection, and local recreation.
