Gravemann's yard

The Gravemanns Hof is the oldest surviving peasant and half-timbered house in the city, also located on the important traffic route to Dortmund. The courtyard complex was built on the filled-in so-called Kampgraben, which was also the site of a much older courtyard complex that has been unequivocally proven archaeologically. For centuries, the property and its agricultural yields were subordinate to the aristocratic convent of Our Lady Essen, the nucleus for the later development of the city of Essen. In the late 20th century, there was a thorough modernization and facade restoration for the establishment of shops.
